Hola! My name is Francisco, and I have been working in landscaping for 14 years here in the United States. I come from Guatemala, where we love spending time outside with family, cooking, laughing, and talking for hours. After many years of helping customers with their dream backyards, I finally decided it was time to build something special for my own — a perfect fire pit.
When I say “perfect,” I don’t mean expensive or super fancy. I mean perfect for my family, for the space we have, and for the feeling I wanted to create. I wanted something warm and welcoming. A place where my wife and kids can roast marshmallows, and where I can cook carne asada for my extended family.
Choosing the Right Spot
The first step was picking the right place. I have a medium-size backyard, not too big, not too small. I chose a spot with good air movement and not too close to the house. This is important for safety. I also made sure the ground was level and clear from trees or low branches.
Materials I Used
I decided to use natural stone, because it looks beautiful and lasts many years. I used some leftover pavers from a client project (don’t worry, they said it was okay!) and bought a fire ring insert from the store. The ring helps the fire last longer and keeps the stones from getting too hot.
Building it took me about two days, working slow and careful. I always tell my customers, “take your time — quality work is better than fast work.”
Making It Cozy
Around the fire pitt, I added a stone patio to keep the area clean and safe. No grass around — that can catch fire. I also built a semicircle bench with stone. Now we can hang out for hours eating, talking and relaxing around the fire in the spring, summer, or fall. It feels like a little outdoor living room!
I also put some solar lights around. They don’t cost much, but they give a nice glow at night. Now it looks like a magazine backyard (well, almost!).
Sharing the Joy
Now, almost every weekend, we invite friends or family. We cook carne asada, tortillas, maybe some chorizo. The kids run around and the adults sit by the fire, talking stories about Guatemala or just enjoying the moment. It reminds me of my childhood, and it feels good to give that experience to my own children.
After so many years making backyards beautiful for other people, I am proud to have a special space for my own family. You don’t need to spend a lot — just use what you know, what you have, and a little love.
Gracias for reading, and if you ever need help making your dream backyard, just call me — I’d be happy to help!
